Import Guide

How to Import a Chinese Car to Canada

Canada's import rules are slightly more relaxed than the US, but importing a Chinese car still requires meeting Transport Canada safety standards and paying significant duties. The 15-year exemption opens a wider window than America's 25-year rule, but newer vehicles face the same compliance challenges.

The 15-year exemption

Vehicles 15 years or older are exempt from Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS). This is 10 years shorter than the US 25-year rule, making Canada more accessible for older Chinese vehicles. For anything newer, you need to prove CMVSS compliance through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program.

Transport Canada safety standards

Vehicles under 15 years must comply with CMVSS, which are closely aligned with US FMVSS but not identical. The manufacturer must certify the vehicle, or a Registered Importer must modify and re-certify it. Without this, the vehicle cannot be registered for road use in any province.

Duties and taxes

The standard duty on imported vehicles is 6.1%, plus GST/HST (5–15% depending on province) on the total value including shipping and duty. Canada does not currently impose the same punitive tariffs on Chinese EVs as the US, though a 100% surtax on Chinese-made EVs was introduced in late 2024. Check current rates — this policy area is evolving quickly.

Shipping to Canada

Most Chinese vehicles arrive at Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto. Shipping costs are similar to the US: $1,500–$3,000 shared container to Vancouver, with an extra $500–$2,000 for East Coast ports. Transit time from Shanghai or Ningbo is typically 2–4 weeks to the West Coast.

Pre-purchase vehicle verification

Canadian customs (CBSA) will inspect import documentation carefully. Any mismatch between the VIN documentation and the physical vehicle will delay or block the import. Decode the VIN and run a full history check before paying the seller — it is far cheaper than shipping a car back to China.

Importing a specific vehicle?

Verify the VIN before you ship — confirm identity, specs, and accident history while the car is still in China.

FAQ

Can I drive a Chinese car in Canada?

Only if it meets CMVSS safety standards or is exempt under the 15-year rule. A vehicle that passes Canadian customs still needs to pass provincial safety inspection and registration. Without CMVSS compliance, you cannot legally register it for road use.

Is it cheaper to import a Chinese car to Canada than to buy locally?

Rarely. After shipping, duty, GST/HST, the EV surtax (if applicable), and any compliance costs, the landed price often exceeds what you would pay for a comparable vehicle from a brand with Canadian dealer support and warranty.
