How to Import a Chinese Car to Canada
Canada's import rules are slightly more relaxed than the US, but importing a Chinese car still requires meeting Transport Canada safety standards and paying significant duties. The 15-year exemption
Vehicles 15 years or older are exempt from Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS). This is 10 years shorter than the US 25-year rule, making Canada more accessible for older Chinese vehicles. For anything newer, you need to prove CMVSS compliance through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program.
Transport Canada safety standards
Vehicles under 15 years must comply with CMVSS, which are closely aligned with US FMVSS but not identical. The manufacturer must certify the vehicle, or a Registered Importer must modify and re-certify it. Without this, the vehicle cannot be registered for road use in any province.
Duties and taxes

Canada does not currently impose the same punitive tariffs on Chinese EVs as the US, though a 100% surtax on Chinese-made EVs was introduced in late 2024.
